Calypso

Calypso's Story
Calypso was born at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch to mini-horse Clove on April 30, 2009. She only weighed 32 pounds and was just 26 inches tall. As a newborn, Calypso was very shy around people, but with lots of loving attention from her ranch caretakers, she has become very friendly. Calypso’s mother Clove arrived at Longmeadow on June 27, 2008. She was underweight and had a foal nursing at her side. Clove was rescued with nine other mini horses and a mini donkey from a puppy mill in Tennessee. When she was examined, it was learned she was pregnant. When Clove’s current foal Cinnamon was old enough, she was weaned (separated) from her mother so that she would have enough energy for the new foal growing inside her. Clove is a good but very protective mother. Sometimes she’ll try to knock down the handlers when they are trying to treat or train Calypso because she wants to make sure her baby is safe.

Calypso's Health
Calypso is growing rapidly and will probably be at least as big as Clove when she is fully grown. Because her mother is solid black, Calypso’s black and white body was a colorful surprise. Calypso is being trained to walk on a lead and pick up her feet for the farrier who takes care of her hooves. She will be vaccinated and dewormed every 30 days, her teeth will be checked yearly, and the farrier will trim her feet every 6-8 weeks.

Calypso's Personality
Calypso likes to race in and out of her stall door when she goes to the exercise pen. When she was born, it took her a while to figure out how to work her front legs. She kept crossing them over each other and getting them tangled. With a little practice, she is now very agile and quick. Currently, she only goes out with her mom Clove. At six months, once her immune system is stronger, she will be able to play with the other animal friends at Longmeadow.
