What is a Substandard Puppy Mill?
According to a 2004 Missouri state audit, one-third of all licensed dog breeders in the United States operate within the state of Missouri. Puppy mills are an estimated $2 billion business for the state. At substandard puppy mills all over the state, we find the same thing time after time: adult breeding dogs spending their entire lifetime locked in cramped cages with no veterinary care, no adequate shelter from the extremities of Missouri seasons, and little access to food or clean water. Adult dogs live in squalor from un-cleaned cages with filthy, matted and entangled hair that can cause an inability to move and atrophied bones. These dogs frequently suffer from painful untreated eye, ear, and dental disease, and female dogs may have reproductive issues from the demands of constant, ongoing breeding.
Adult dogs rescued from substandard puppy mills initially do not know how to walk, may be scared of human touch and may suffer from debilitating mental stress of spending their life in a cage.
