Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force rescues more than 90 dogs from substandard puppy mill in Greene County
Update-Wednesday, March 25, 2009- The Humane Society of Missouri staff has received thousands of adoption applications and are now starting to select adopters to take home a Yorkshire Terrier. Many of the dogs are expected to be placed into loving homes within the next month.
Update-Thursday, February 26, 2009- Because of severe dental problems, some of the Yorkshire Terriers have had denistry done such as cleaning and extractions. They are now recovering in the care of our dedicated foster volunteers' homes. They are receiving pain medication, antibiotics and soft food for the next few weeks. The rest of the dogs are progressing slowly and will soon be spayed and neutered.
We have stopped taking potential adopters information on the Yorkshire Terriers. If you filled out a form or left your information with one of our staff, you will soon be contacted by mail or email regarding the adoption process. Please remember that we have many other dogs looking for forever homes including the dogs rescued from a substandard puppy mill in Newton County.
Update-Tuesday, February 17, 2009- For the first time in their lives each of our wonderful rescued Yorkies…
- has been examined by a veterinarian and is receiving necessary medication and treatment
- has been dewormed and given flea preventative and vaccinations
- has been relieved of the nasty, overgrown, feces-encrusted, severely matted fur that prevented many from seeing, walking and breathing properly
- has had a nail trim and ear cleaning
- is eating nutritious food, twice a day -- many are on senior diets because of their dental problems
- does not have to walk and sleep on a cold, wire bottom cage
- receives clean, soft, comforting bedding every day
- gets a daily exercise period
- is discovering fun toys and the joys of a peanut butter-filled Kong.
And, best of all, they are experiencing loving attention from people who want the very best of each and every one of them.
February 13, 2009-Working in cooperation with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force is rescuing more than 90 dogs living in filthy conditions on the site of an unlicensed, substandard dog breeding facility near Pleasant Hope, Missouri. The Greene County Sheriff’s Department issued a warrant that was served to remove the animals today.
The majority of the animals are believed to be Yorkshire Terriers. The animals’ kennels were observed to be covered with feces and urine. The animals appeared to have no access to water or food. Many of the dogs have severely matted, overgrown hair. Some appeared to be limping, possibly the result of living in cages with mesh bottoms which do not properly support the small paws of these dogs.
The rescued dogs will be taken to the Humane Society’s Headquarters on Macklind Avenue in St. Louis for triage.
Custody of the dogs has been awarded to the Humane Society of Missouri. Due to their poor condition, it may be several weeks before many of the dogs would be available for adoption.
