The Call of the Wild:
Can you hear them? If you slow down and listen quietly, what animal sounds do you hear in your own backyard? You might hear the chirping of a cardinal, a squirrel scurrying through the leaves, or even a bee buzzing near a flower. All animals have their own special language so they can communicate with each other! Come find out how our animal friends of the sea, sky and land communicate to send important messages back and forth to each other in the animal kingdom. Let’s find out how we can help them when they are in need! We’ve all found a baby bird who has fallen out of a nest or have seen an injured animal on the side of the highway and have felt hopeless because we didn’t know what to do. Come meet some fabulous people in our community who DO know what to do and who dedicate their lives to helping our wild animal friends like geese, wolves, bats and raccoons. Meet some special wild animal friends too!

Extreme Doggie Makeover
Did you brush your teeth and hair when you woke up today? We hope so! We’re much healthier when we do! Pets are much healthier if they are groomed regularly too! Watch a doggie makeover right before your very eyes! Meet a groomer and watch her use her tools of the trade to groom a pooch from head to tail! Many of the dogs who walk through our shelter doors have matted, dirty fur and long nails because they were homeless with no one to care for them or because they were not taken care of properly by their owners. In addition to lots of love, attention and rehabilitation, many of our shelter dogs get extreme doggie makeovers so they feel better from head to dewclaw! If you’ve ever wondered what happens to your dog when you drop him off at the groomer’s, here’s your chance to see a makeover behind-the-scenes!

Date: Thursday, July 30
Where: Humane Society Hdqtrs

Happy Tales
The Adventures of Skittles

In April, Skittles could be seen wondering around as a stray near the Wesport Adoption Center in Maryland Heights for a few weeks. She was left at the shelter after operating hours, tied to a post with a rope. She soon chewed through the rope and was gone by morning. She hung out at the local businesses and could often be found curiously watching Humane Society of Missouri volunteer Pet Pals walking dogs and knew they carried goodies in their pouches. No volunteers or staff were ever able to catch Skittles by luring her with treats. She came closer and closer to the dogs that were on their walks that finally one day she followed one of them right inside the shelter!

Lilly_Before

She was soon adopted by Humane Society of Missouri volunteer Michelle Charboneau. Her new name is Lily. Michelle says that Lily already knew many commands like sit and stay. She quickly learned  to use her crate, potty outside and to be quiet by following her new big sister, Ava. They wrestle constantly and play well together. Lily has tons of energy and is very sweet. A happy ending for a happy dog.

Ask the Vet
Can My Pet Catch Swine Flu?

Dr. Steve Schwartz

Dr. Steve Schwartz

Can My Pet Catch Swine Flu?

Don't worry, pet parents! The recent, rapid outbreak of the H1N1 virus, previously known as swine flu, appears to present little risk of infecting our furry friends. In the past few weeks, only humans have been affected by the new virus, and it's still unknown how the virus will impact other species.

"Currently there's no data demonstrating any risk of dogs and cats contracting this strain of the virus," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Hospital in New York City. "However, owners of pet pigs, as well as farmers, should monitor their animals' health more closely and take steps to limit transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa."

If you do count a pet pig as your animal companion, please consult with your veterinarian about a Type A influenza vaccine, which is available and recommended for all healthy swine.

For the latest information about the outbreak and your pet's health, please visit the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu). If you suspect your pet is ill or if he exhibits any sudden changes in behavior, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
