Rescue Update More Than 400 Dogs from Suspected Dog Fighting Find Refuge with Humane Society of Missouri |
| Photo courtesy of KSDK. Dogs rescued in the July 8 raid of multiple suspected dog fighting operations. |
The more than 400 dogs rescued last week by the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force are now receiving veterinary exams and treatment, nutritious food, water and care from dedicated staff and volunteers in facilities set up just for them.
The dogs were seized as part of an eight-state dog fighting investigation that involved state and federal authorities and resulted in multiple arrests. Humane Society of Missouri animal cruelty investigators provided the information that lead to the investigation. The next step for the dogs will be individual behavior evaluations conducted by a team of Humane Society of Missouri experts along with others including representatives from the ASPCA. Read more.

Kind Kids Bookmarks for the Animals |
Micah loves animals. On Saturdays, one of her favorite things to do is visit the animals at the Humane Society. On one of these trips, she visited Sugar, a dog who was there because her family could no longer afford to keep her. Micah went back to school and told her teacher, Mrs. Delaney and her 2nd grade class at Grace Christian Academy all about Sugar.
That day, Micah designed a bookmark. Mrs. Delaney suggested that the class do a project selling the bookmarks to help a non-profit organization and assigned Micah the task of project leader. Of course, Micah selected the Humane Society of Missouri as the organization that would receive the money. The entire class jumped in wholeheartedly to make the project a success and decided that they would create and sell bookmarks for 10 cents apiece. As project leader, Micah was responsible for choosing designs for the bookmarks; staffing the booth where bookmarks were sold; counting the money that was raised; and making announcements to the school regarding the sale and its progress.
The class sold bookmarks to other students, parents, school staff and friends, which combined with donations, totaled more than $50. Micah and her mother Faith Barnes presented a check to the Humane Society of Missouri's Westport Area Center in June.

Ask the Vet Medical Challenges of Puppy Mill Dogs |
Dr. Steve Schwartz Director, Veterinary Medical Centers Humane Society of Missouri
My dog was rescued from a puppy mill. What kinds of medical challenges will she face?
Thank you for giving one of these special dogs a second chance in your home with your family. With lots of love and attention, these dogs can become wonderful best friends.
However, because of the deplorable conditions in which many animals live in puppy mills, they face numerous health and behavior issues, some of which may last throughout their lifetimes.
- Many dogs have severe dental disease and will require daily owner care, regular veterinary visits and possibly a special diet.
- It is a possibility that these dogs will have varying degrees of patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation) which may progress in severity now that they will be more active and no longer living in cages. If knee problems develop, long term medication and expensive surgery may be required.
- Because of prior poor nutrition, these dogs have an increased risk of fractures.
Visit our website for more information on our three full-service Veterinary Medical Centers open to the public.
