Humane Society of Missouri Rescues, Reunites and Shelters More than 300 Animals from the Flood

Dear Friend,

Just like you, all of us at the Humane Society of Missouri are very concerned for our fellow Missourians and Iowa neighbors who are in the path of rising flood waters.  Each day we hear reports the flooding may be as bad if not worse than the 1993 flood many of us remember.

One week ago, we received a request for assistance from the Iowa Department of Agriculture for rescue teams trained in water rescue.  We immediately dispatched three rescue teams, totaling 10 people with boats, trailers and the Humane Society of Missouri mobile shelter unit.  I am proud to report that not only were we the first animal rescue team on the scene, but also we rescued more than 300 pets.

Iowa Flood Rescue TeamNow, as flood levels increase closer to home, we are shifting our rescue efforts to the northern Missouri counties of Lewis, Clark, Ralls and Pike counties.  Today, at the request of the Lewis County sheriff, an HSMO rescue team delivered sheltering supplies to Canton, Missouri. Yesterday, we set up an emergency pet shelter in Pike County near Bowling Green which is already providing care to local animals.  As emergency conditions develop down river, we are at the ready and on call to respond to additional requests for rescue, sheltering and supplies.

Since the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita when we rescued more than 2000 animals, the Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Rescue Team has become recognized as a national leader in flood relief efforts. In multiple instances, we have been called upon by neighboring states to lead animal rescue efforts in their disaster-stricken communities.

We are able to respond quickly and effectively because of the constant training and preparation of our Disaster Rescue Team and the heartwarming and substantial support of individuals throughout Missouri and our region.

Thank you for your significant part in helping us bring relief to pets and peace of mind to their owners during their times of need.  We also greatly appreciate your expressions of caring and concern and your interest in all our work for animals in need. On behalf of the animals, we look forward to your continuing support.

Please make a donation to our Disaster Relief Fund today to help pets and their families displaced by this disaster.

With Kind Regards,
